Consumer Protection Reminds the Public: Resources Are Available for People Struggling with Gambling Addiction

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

HARTFORD – The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) are reminding the public that resources are available for those who struggle with gambling addiction.

DCP, along with DMHAS and CCPG, are also reminding adults who choose to participate in sports wagering to review responsible gaming resources and utilize tools such as timers and money limits.

“March marks National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase public awareness of problem gambling and promote prevention, treatment, and recovery services,” said DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli. “We know this is a popular time to place wagers, but as people get caught up in the excitement of the end of the college basketball season, it can be easy to lose track of how much time or money you may have spent. We urge consumers who choose to place wagers to utilize the resources available to track their gaming habits, and if you or someone you know struggles with gambling addiction, consider signing up for the statewide self-exclusion list and seek assistance from our partners at the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling.”

“With nearly 175,000 Connecticut residents at risk of developing a problem with gambling, this is an important time to emphasize that every individual experience related to problem gambling is significant,” said DMHAS Commissioner Nancy Navarretta. “During this month, we intentionally highlight stories from all communities to ignite hope and inform our communities about available resources. Through collaboration we continue to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure that every story truly matters.”

“Problem Gambling Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to shine a much-needed light on the resources that are available for those individuals and families impacted by gambling related harm” said Diana Goode, Executive Director, Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling. “Our 24/7 Problem Gambling Helpline, that connects those in need with treatment and resources, or our www.responsibleplayct.org website that shares tips and strategies to have a safer experience for those who choose to gamble, are always available to help Connecticut’s citizens.”

The Department of Consumer Protection offers a statewide portal for consumers to voluntarily exclude themselves from receiving direct marketing materials and being able to participate in gaming activities in Connecticut. Almost 4,000 individuals have signed up for self-exclusion since the list’s inception in September 2021.
